Summer's End at Saratoga

I always spend Labor Day weekend basking in horses at the Saratoga Race Course, feeling like I'm in heaven for a few all-too-brief idyllic days.

I typically get up before dawn so I can be at the track by 7:00am to watch the horses jog, gallop, and work out for a few hours.

On Saturday morning, September 2nd, I was lucky enough to get this shot of the graded stakes-winning mare, NOBLE STELLA (GER), as she stood serenely taking in the workout scene, before galloping around the mile and an eighth track, in preparation for her appearance in today's Glens Falls Handicap (G3), run on the turf at a mile and three eighths.

I'm pleased to report that this classy five-year-old mare emerged as a two-length victor, on a turf course labeled as "good," after the recent rains, boosting her earnings to over $643,000.

Open House at Eye of the Storm Equine Rescue

Eye of the Storm Equine Rescue, a nonprofit volunteer center that cares for horses who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned, will be having an Open House and Tack Sale on Saturday, May 20th from 10:30am to 4:00pm (if you go, you'll have time to get home for the Preakness!).

It's an opportunity to visit the 10 horses currently in residence, and browse through the organization's collection of new and used tack, with everything from blankets to saddles. The proceeds will help to support the upkeep of the rescue horses.

Eye of the Storm is located at 65 White Pond Rd. in Stow, just off Rte. 117 , not far from Erickson's Ice Cream in Maynard.

Horses with Cushings Syndrome

My 28 year old Arabian mare, Emazing Grace, has been diagnosed with Cushings. I'm starting the research process to figure out how to deal with this unpleasant development. My veterinarian recommended that I contact White Haven Farm in Upton, MA. I don't know if I wasn't paying attention or if he didn't really tell me what to expect but what I found is White Haven Farm.

I called this morning and left a voice mail for Donna White who returned my call very quickly.
She is my new best friend! There is so much to learn but Donna has been on this trip more than a few times and put my feet on the path.

Bay State Equine Rescue

Bay State Equine Rescue will hold its annual volunteer meeting at 7:00pm on Wedneday evening, January 11th at the Oakham Congregational Church in Oakham Center. Northeast Horsemen's Conference & Trade Show

Just when cabin fever will be really setting in, there's a ray of hope next month during the Northeast Horsemen's Conference and Trade Show, scheduled for February 11-12, 2006 at the Sturbridge Host Hotel.

The conference offers more than 30 hours of sessions for equine enthusiasts of every discipline, interest, and skill level. Topics include training and technique, horse/rider communication, nutrition, fitness, and tack care.

Among the dozens of wares and services that will be showcased during the Trade Show are barn builders, trailers, saddlery shops, and feed stores and distributors.

We're both realtors with the Harvard, Massachusetts office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, but our first love is horses!

Gwen Cook has more than 30 years experience as a breeder, owner, and trainer of Arabian horses. She currently has two retired friends, Emazing Grace (Emauson x Bay Delight), and Back Bey (Bay-el-Bey x FTL Windsong). Gwen purchased Gracie and Bey both as babies and raised them herself. Both have had very successful show careers (Back Bey made two trips to the U.S. Arabian Horse National show). Gracie went on to a second career teaching young riders. Together Gracie and Bey had three daughters; Diva Bey, Beyesque and Ad Lib.

Maureen Harmonay owned, bred, and raced thoroughbreds for almost 20 years, under the auspices of her own stable, and her father's "Saxon Woods Stables," with runners at Belmont, Aqueduct, and Suffolk Downs. She ran a thoroughbred bloodstock agency, Harmonay Thoroughbred Associates, from an office in Boston's Fanueil Hall for many years, and served on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Maureen considers horse racing her avocation, and cherishes the days she spends at Saratoga each summer.
